A Lifeline for the Vulnerable: Linn County's Rental Assistance Program

While the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted communities across Iowa, the most vulnerable members of society have been hit hardest.

For those already struggling to afford basic necessities like housing, loss of income can lead to impossible choices between paying rent, buying food, or accessing healthcare.  

Linn County recognized that its most disadvantaged residents would require additional support to weather this crisis.

In 2021, the county established an Emergency Rental Assistance Program, providing up to 12 months of aid for rent and utilities to low-income households facing hardship. Over 1,500 vulnerable families have already benefited from this lifeline.

For many aid recipients, this assistance has been the difference between staying housed or facing eviction and potential homelessness. While eviction moratoriums have now ended, the need for support remains dire.

This program helps create stability for those who need it most by keeping them safely and securely sheltered during this turbulent time.  

To qualify for aid, applicants must meet income requirements and show that their difficulties paying rent began after March 2020. However, assistance is available not just for those facing imminent eviction but for any low-income household struggling with the financial impacts of the pandemic.

The streamlined application process allows aid to be deployed quickly and efficiently to those most in need.
